Professional Skills and Experience

Professional Skills and Experience

Taught various courses in Botany, Microbiology and Plant Pathology since 1963.

Carried out research on various problems associated with the increasing importance of agricultural economy in Egypt and other countries.

Spent 18 months as a visiting professor in the laboratory of phytopathology, Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium (1977-1979) working on mechanisms of resistance in cotton plants to Fusarium wilt disease.

Spent 9 months in Davis as Fulbright Scholar at the Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, working on the biological control of Botrytis cinerea on different plants.

Was on leave to Ministry of Agriculture and Water in Saudi Arabia to work as Head of Agricultural Extension Department in Qatif Agricultural Improvement Scheme, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. Lead a team of 10 agricultural advisor and 15 technicians. We were serving 400 farmers in the pilot scheme area in order to teach them new agricultural technology including methods of plant pest and disease control.

Carried out research on the disease of date-palm, citrus trees, alfalfa and certain other crops in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia in collaboration with research groups from the plant protection Department, Faculty of Agricultural and Food, King Faisal Univ. at Hoffuf, and Dahran, Saudi Arabia (1981-1984).

Supervised a research group working on crop loss assessment due to pre- and post-harvest pests and diseases in Egypt from 1988-1991.

While in Davis I attended classes and carried out experimental work in recombinant DNA, molecular biology and other common techniques used in gene manipulation. I have also attended training courses and have been able to use different computer soft-ware programs including 1,2,3 lotus, word perfect, harvard- graphics. SAS and Macihtoch.

Member of different academic societies of phtopathology and biological sciences.

Research Interests and Activities

I. Physiopathological studies:

The role of cell wall degrading enzymes in patholgenesis in certain host-pathogen systems was studied. The effect of infection on certain enzymes, ascorbic acid, pH, total acidity was also studied in different host-pathogen systems and at different levels of susceptibility or resistance. Furthemore, the relation between phenolic content and cytokinin compounds, on one hand, and resistance in different plant species on the other hand time was studied. Different mechanisms of resistance in certain host plants were investigated

II. Biological Control of Plant Diseases:

I started my research on biological control as early as 1975. I studied the antagonistic effect of Bacillus subtilis and Penicillium patulum on Phytophthora cryptogea and Rhizoctonia solani. My research showed that this effect was infuenced by the composition of test medium in case of P.patulum. culture filtrate of B. subtilis was promising in controlling damping-off of cotton seedling caused by R. solani but failed to protect summer squash seedlings against P.crytogea.

Penicillium patulum was effective against P.cryptogea on summer squash seedlings but it showed no effect in case of R.solani on cotton seedlings. However, culture filtrate of P.patulum, was promising in controlling both diseases.

I also observed an antagonistic effect of Bacillus sp. on Acremonium sclerotignem the causal agent of white necrosis on Eucalyptus spp. We were able to control the disease by applying Bacillus at a concentration of 1*10^11 cell/ml to leaves 24 hr before inoculation.

Bacillus subtilis was also antagonistic to Fusarium proliferatum var. minus the causal agent of Dracaena sandreana proliferosis disease. However, application of Bacillus cells onto Dracaena leaves was unsuccessful in controlling the disease neither before nor after inoculation with Fusarium spores.

III. Disease surveys:

I have carried out several disease surveys of stone-fruit trees, citrus trees, certain ornamental plant, date-palm trees both in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

IV. Plant Disease Control:

This study includes screening different cultivars for resistance to plant pathogens, screening different pesticides in vitro against plant pathogens and field experiments for chemical disease control. Toxicity of pesticides to host plant was also investigated.
